Left 'EM IN STITCHES Bev Hult's outstanding quilt that fetched more than $2,000 at the Waseca Fish Fry auction.

If anyone ever asks just how tight-knit communities in small town Saskatchewan are, just tell them to look at Waseca.
The burgh of about 150 people, about 40 klicks southeast of Lloydminster, held its fifth annual fish fry and sold the place out—all 225 tickets gone in just days.
The yearly event where neighbours and friends are equally welcomed with open arms also boasts a silent and a live auction with all the proceeds going back to the town to support things like the recreation board, the community hall—where the Saturday evening event took place—the community centre and skating rink.
“Last year we raised $13,000,” said Sandy Sutherland, one of the tireless Waseca volunteers who bust their humps to put on a great event.
“This year, we believe we may be around the $20,000 mark.”
Many area and Lloydminster businesses generously gave items to be auctioned—from pressure washers, to yards and yards of gravel, to skidder services and, heck, even birdhouses were on the block—and nearly everything was sold for more than retail value to the highest bidders.
A highlight of the evening was a stunning, Canadiana-themed quilt crafted by Bev Hult, who has produced one nearly every year to be auctioned at the fish fry.
Last year Hult set a record when her quilt garnered about $900.
This year’s quilt sold during an intense bidding war for a whopping $2,100.
The fish fry got it’s start a half-decade ago when “five ladies wanted to raise money for a playground,” said Sutherland.
It has grown in leaps and bounds ever since.
“We couldn’t have done it without all the excellent support from the businesses in the Waseca, Marshall and Lloydminster areas,” said Sutherland.
And for those who missed the weekend festivities, well, there’s always next year.
