UP, UP AND AWAY The 16th annual Lloydminster Region Health Foundation Gala is coming up on Oct. 21 with a Heroes Among Us theme. Entertainment will be included with admission to be announced. Last year's gala featured the Famous Players Band.

There could be some caped health crusaders at this year’s Lloydminster Region Health Foundation Gala.
The expectation comes from the gala theme, Heroes Among Us, to celebrate local healthcare wonder workers at the Lloydminster Stockade Convention Centre on Oct. 21.
“There will be a lot of Gotham-like super heroes and different kind of themed elements throughout the room to kind of give everybody the feel of the super heroes,” said Carissa Smith, foundation events and marketing manager.
“It works well to help us kind of capture all of the people that contribute to healthcare.”
Proceeds from the 16th annual event will support the relocation and upgrades of the renal dialysis unit currently located within the Lloydminster Hospital.
The relocation and upgrading of the dialysis department is expected to cost about $1.5 million.
The improvements will provide a much more functional space which in turn, will allow more patients to receive their dialysis treatments close to home, but a new location has yet to be determined.
“There are no set plans—we have discussed moving it down to the Prairie North Health Centre building downtown, but there hasn’t been a confirmed kind of announcement on that yet,” said Smith.
Since its inception the gala has raised more than $2.5 million to support a variety of healthcare projects in the community.
Organizers are holding out hope they can equal or top the $103,000 raised at last year’s gala with fingers crossed.
“The economy isn’t on our side right now, but if we could get to that this year or more we’d be happy,” said Smith.
A full table of eight tickets are on sale for $1,400 with a half table for four going for $700 with individual tickets available soon.
“We have a couple of tables left to go, but we’re pretty happy with where we’re at,” said Smith with about 85 per cent of tickets sold with less than a month to go.
Tickets are available online at the lrhf.ca website or by phone at 306-820-6161.
The gala fundraiser will feature a silent auction, a live auction with auctioneer Shelby Stokes, a full course diner buffet, specialty bar and entertainment.
“Our community is very fortunate to have such supportive sponsors and donors,” said Pamela Smith, committee chair.
“The success of this event would not be possible without them, the gala committee, volunteers and of course the guests.”
The committee is keeping the details of how the gala will recognize healthcare heroes close to their sleeves.
“We want to keep that on the down-low for now,” said Smith.
“We are going to bring in a couple of local doctors, health care professionals and some of our volunteers that contributed lots over the years and our donors,” she said.
As for what guests can expect to see when they step inside the Stockade, those details are also being kept under wrap.
“Like always, we like to keep it a bit of a surprise—we like everybody to have a wow factor when they enter a room,” said Smith.
