Lloydminster and area residents who need legal advice will get their chance, free of charge, as Pro Bono Law Alberta and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan are holding a free legal clinic at the Provincial Court of Alberta building on April 29.
“Access to justice is a real issue in our community,” said Ryan Armstrong, a local lawyer with Robertson Moskal Sarsons.
“It’s important to make sure everyone, regardless of status or income, has the ability to have legal assistance with whatever problem they’re facing.”
The litigators will be offering up advice on issues ranging from criminal, civil and tenancy law to family law, health, immigration and others.
This is the second such clinic offered in the Border City, and after the success of last year’s, which was held in September, organizers are looking at making the clinics annual, and possibly twice a year if there is enough public interest.
Last year almost 60 people attended the clinic.
It’s encouraged that people make appointments so they can be lined up with the proper lawyers, as most of them specialize in one area or another, and conflicts of interest can be avoided.
“Not every lawyer is well versed in every area of the law, so we want to make sure if it’s a family law issue we have a family law lawyer,” Armstrong said.
The clinic is geared toward anyone who needs legal advice and there is no income threshold, so those who don’t qualify for legal aid might find the event particularly interesting.
Armstrong said it’s important to offer a service like this to the community and that all lawyers should have an obligation to provide some pro bono services or services without the expectation of being paid.
Alberta residents who want to book an appointment can call 1-844-550-3792. Saskatchewan residents can call 1-855-833-7257.
