Cyclists like Lloydminster Councillor Linnea Goodhand are cheering the city’s purchase of land along 12 Street from 75 Avenue to Highway 17 for future widening.
Council approved the purchase of 6.52 acres Monday from Sanjo Developments Ltd. for a total of $195,600 or $30,000 per acre.
“I have been a cyclist on that road no longer because of the traffic and the speed,” said Coun. Linnea Goodhand.
“It needs attention — unfortunately, you can’t create a wider road overnight so this is process — this is the first step.”
The purchase was handled by the city’s Transportation Offsite Reserve account in four separate parcels to allow for future 12 Street expansion with no time frame provided.
“I honestly don’t know what the specifics are,” said Goodhand, who added nobody anticipated the kind of high traffic volume on that route.
“It’s just if you’ve ever driven down that road you know there is an obvious city owned property within which the expansion can occur.”
The city’s planning and engineering department will determine the next step.
“It needs some work – it’s really grown in the last couple of years,” said Goodhand.
