Friends, family and caregivers of those struggling with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia now have a support group they can attend in the evening.
Dianne Davidson, facilitator for the Lloydminster Caregiver Support Group, started the evening meetings after she began a full-time job and couldn’t attend the only other support group that was set up in afternoons.
“I just started it in October,” said Davidson.
“There’s an afternoon group that I have been attending for just over a year and it’s great and really helpful, but now that I work full-time I really saw the need to get an evening group going,” she said.
The caregiver group gives people a chance to share experiences in looking after for loved ones and offers information to help those who care for people suffering from dementia related illnesses.
Davidson said by sharing experiences attendees can learn from one another and know they’re not alone because caring for people with disabilities can come with a lot of stress.
She also offers modules so people can keep up with current information and practices related to being a caregiver.
“If they have questions I can’t answer myself then I have contacts that we can refer them to and they can get more information through that too.”
Caring for someone affected with Alzheimer’s is quite difficult, Davidson said, and when someone close to you is diagnosed you can go through a lot of different emotions yourself.
She said she feels groups like these are important for a community because of the knowledge they offer and to let people know they are not alone in providing care.
“I know there are so many people in Lloyd that are affected by the disease but can’t take time off work, especially in an economy like this where jobs are scarce. If you have a job you want to be committed to it,” said Davidson.
“It’s very important to reach out in the evenings for people to be able to attend.”
The Lloydminster Caregiver Support Group meets every third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, 4419 52 Ave., and is free to join.
