Lloydminster residents can indulge their sweet-tooth with a little less guilt this month by supporting the Cupcakes for the Cause campaign, put on by the Lloydminster and District Co-op and Lloydminster Region Health Foundation (LRHF).

The campaign helps raise money for the Lloydminster Hospital’s mammography program, with part of the proceeds of all six-packs and two-packs sold going toward this important medical service.

“Cupcakes for the Cause has been going on for quite a while and it’s actually raised over $12,000 for mammography over at the hospital,” said Wendy Plandowski, CEO of the LRHF. “It’s just a phenomenal program because when you look at the statistics every year, we have more and more people getting checked and doing their annual check-ups.

“We know that being able to have that service provided locally here in Lloydminster sometimes means the difference between somebody getting checked and not getting checked, which is really a lifesaving measure.”

All of the proceeds from the campaign are used locally so people who purchase the cupcakes can know that they are helping with the health of their neighbours and fellow residents. Plandowski says the LRHF is “thrilled” to have the support of the Co-op every year and that the company is an outstanding partner in the campaign.

This marks the eighth year the two organizations have teamed to do Cupcakes for the Cause and Plandowski again says the success can be seen by the amount of people getting checked for breast cancer each year since the campaign has started.

“I don’t have the exact percentage for the increase this year but it was significant, the amount of people, it’s almost doubled year over year,” she said. “We just like to remind everybody that October is a really good time to talk your doctor and find out if getting a mammogram is right for you and then making sure you follow up.”

Gloria Willard, who is the bakery manager at the Co-op, has been there since the beginning and says the campaign is a good way to help out locally while being able to share some of the bakery’s desserts.

“We’ve helped many different areas of the health foundation, such as the mammography machine and a few other areas at the hospital,” she said. “It’s a great way for us to get in the community with sharing a little bit of our sweet treats.”

The Cupcakes for the Cause campaign has been catching on annually with last year seeing somewhere around 500 six-packs and over 1,000 two packs sold, which is up significantly since the campaign began.

Six-packs go for $4.99, with $2 going to the LRHF and two-packs run for $1.99 with 50 cents going to the LRHF.
