A third period surge wasn’t enough as the Lloydminster Bobcats dropped the opener of their Alberta Junior Hockey League quarter-final series 4-3 last night in Grande Prairie.
Zahn Raubenheimer and Travis Dunstall each had three points on the night for the Storm, who outshot the Bobcats 35-28.
The’Cats trailed 4-1 after two periods, but began to claw away in the third. Kory Chisholm tallied five minutes in and Kyle Bowen got them to within one with four minutes remaining, but they were unable to get the equalizer despite tossing 14 shots at Storm goaltender Chad Carder.
‘Cats goaltender Garret Sheehan was lifted midway through the second after giving up four goals on 16 shots. Joel Miller turned aside all 19 the rest of the way.
Brett Slobodzian also scored for the Bobcats.
Game 2 of the series goes tonight in GP with Game 3 on Sunday at the Civic Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
Around the AJHL
The Bonnyville Pontiacs took Game 1 in Sherwood Park 2-1. Tyler Henry scored the winner with 6:11 remaining. Julien Laplante made 36 stops in the win.
All six first round series are on the ice tonight.
