Local youth want you to put pen to paper and help fix the “Kitscoty corner.”
Erin O’Neill and Kylie McLean are asking Alberta residents to sign their petition so that life-saving improvements will be implemented at the Highway 16 and 897 intersection.
From 10 a.m to 6 p.m yesterday, O’Neill and friends set up shop at Sobey’s armed with pens and copies of the petition for people to sign.
“Every signature counts,” said O’Neill, who along with several others hit the pavement recently as well, to go door-to-door to solicit signatures for the petition. “We want to thank all of our volunteers and supporters.”
As of Wednesday morning, over 1,000 signatures had been collected. Alberta residents have until Sept. 8 to sign the petition, which is available at several Lloydminster businesses, as well as in Kitscoty, Marwayne, Innisfree, Dewberry and Vermilion.
“We want to bring them in before people start taking them and then forget about them,” said O’Neill.
According to information collected by O’Neill and McLean, from 2000 to 2008 there were a total of 67 reported accidents, two involved fatalities at the Highway 16 and 897 intersection. And in the last two years there have been more than four deaths.
Petitions are available at:
•In Lloydminster at Weatherford, Lloyd Auto Body, Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, Starbucks, Booster Juice, AAA Academy and Consulting, amongst other businesses.
•In Kitscoty at Automated Tank Manufacturing and other businesses.
•In Vermilion at the Tuscany Grill, Shell, Husky, Co-op and Webb’s Machinery plus other local businesses.
•In Innisfree at the Petro Pass.
