Celebrate the year’s biggest birthday bash with Barr Colony this weekend.
The Barr Colony Heritage Cultural Centre invites the community to partake in their annual Canada Day celebrations, commencing Thursday morning with a pancake breakfast at Weaver Park.
“The events that we provide, the exhibitions that we bring in and programming that we do really has become a tradition,” said RaeLynn Lake, cultural programmer at the Centre. “The Barr Colony has been doing it for over 10 years now and it’s a community tradition to come out.”
More than 100 volunteers, and nearly 12 months of planning and preparations are committed to the annual celebrations – providing a venue for between 1,500 to 3,000 residents to enjoy the day and celebrate the nation’s birthday.
The community celebration aims to “build community through arts and heritage” with a variety of attractions and activities including a farmers market, interior exhibits, Lego contest entries, heritage demonstrations, Hot Doggers performances, kids’ carnival games and a dunk tank.
The official Canada Day ceremonies will commence at 1 p.m. with the national anthem and dignitaries’ address and will be followed by the parade of antique tractors.
“It’s a great way to do some community building,” said Lake. ”Come out and spend time with your neighbours and the people that live in your community.”
“It’s not Canada Day without coming to the Barr Colony and Weaver Park for the Canada Day celebration. Come out and take part in the fun family and activities, it’s a great event.”
Canada Day celebrations will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission to outdoor activities in Weaver Park is by donation. Admission for the BCHCC’s exhibits and activities is $5 for adults and $3 for youth.
Barr Colony is still in need of volunteers for the Canada Day celebrations. Those interested should contact staff at 306-825-5655.
