One member of the Kitscoty RCMP Detachment was sent to hospital after an explosion inside the detachment on Monday.
Shortly before 2 p.m., the male member, who has 12 years of RCMP service, was handling an explosive device which was an exhibit in an investigation when it exploded. Another RCMP regular member and a support staff person were in close proximity to the incident and have undergone medical check for injury. Neither suffered serious injury.
The RCMP member suffered non–life threatening injuries and was taken by ground ambulance to Lloydminster Hospital.
The Kitscoty Fire Department has cleared the building and was secured for further investigation. All calls for service to Kitscoty RCMP Detachment will be managed by Lloydminster and Vermilion RCMP Detachments.
“The RCMP is committed to providing him, his family and his co-workers the care and the support they will require in the aftermath of this unfortunate incident,” the RCMP said in a statement. “This member's injury in the line of duty demonstrates the ever present risks faced by those who devote their lives to ensuring safe communities for Albertans.”
