Flags were flying at half mast at City Hall on Wednesday morning remembering the 144 people who lost their lives on the job site in Alberta and Saskatchewan in 2009.
Mayor Jeff Mulligan, Lakeland College Lloyd Campus principal Wendy Plandowski and Lloydminster Catholic School Division director of education Doug Robertson were on hand for the ceremony.
“These are people that left for work, just like you left for work this morning – these are people that didn’t make it home from that day. They never got to say, ‘how was your day at work?’” said Mulligan.
“We’re going to lower the flags to half mast in memory of the 144 people and in hopes of raising the profile, so that we all take just a little more care and encourage people around us to do so.”
The Day of Mourning pays tribute to those who died as a result of a workplace injury or illness through the inscription of their names in the Canadian Labour Congress’ national registry. In Saskatchewan, names are also read into the official record in the Saskatchewan Legislature and in the Canadian Parliament.
