Streakers took over the LloydMall yesterday to show their colours and support for the MS Society.
The Lloydminster MS Society and Chatters Hair Salon teamed up for the second annual streaking event to kick-off the 2010 Lloydminster MS Walk Campaign.
Participants of all ages had their hair streaked with red temporary hair colour, or purchased clip-in streaks, as a way of visually demonstrating their support for the MS cause. The event was held to promote MS awareness and encourage residence to register for the 2010 Enerflex Walk.
The 12th annual Lloydminster Enerflex MS Walk will be held on April 24 and will allow residence to show their support by participating in a one, five or 10 kilometre walk through Bud Miller Park and the city trail system.
“For the past four years it has consistently broken records and we’ve continued to see a huge increase in our participants so I think it’s fair to say that the event is really catching on and people are really getting behind the cause,” said Johanna Green, executive and development director of the MS Society Lloydminster Chapter.
Last year, 563 people and 50 teams registered for the walk, raising a total of $174,000. The society hopes to continue breaking records with their 2010 goal of 600 walkers, 60 teams and $190,000.
“We’re encouraging people to register as soon as possible because it is a pledge-based event so the sooner you can register, ultimately the more money we can raise,” said Green. Anybody who’s been to the event would tell you that it’s a moving day. While it’s a fun day, it’s also really important in drawing awareness and attention to the fact that MS affects a great number of people in this community and it’s your chance to really feel like you’re contributing towards making a difference.”
Those interested in participating in the Enerflex MS Walk, an individual or team, can register online at www.mswalks.ca, by phone at 780-871-0513, or in person at the Lloydminster Office in the Community Services Centre (4419- 52 Avenue).
