Local RCMP prepared for New Year's Eve

 While most will be gathered with friends and family eagerly anticipating the countdown for 2010, the local RCMP Detachment are gearing up for what tends to be one of their busiest nights of the year – New Year’s Eve.

2010 to bring 'culture shift:' Mayor

With a new year in sight, Mayor Jeff Mulligan is excited to hit the ground running.

Airport security steps up

As a result of a terrorist incident on Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on December 26, 2009, additional security measures were put in place at Canada's airports for flights to the United States.

Collision closes Highway

 At about 8:20  a.m. on Monday a super-b tanker semi unit traveling eastbound on Highway 16 collided with a service rig near the Highway 897 intersection at Kitscoty. 

Gift of Technology

 The Lloydminster Chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters has received the gift of technology and efficiency this holiday season. 
 
The local BBBS beat out more than 400 applicants in a provincial-wide contest, earning the agency a $50,000 technology prize. 

No nuclear for Lloyd, for now

Lloydminster won't be home to a nuclear power plant it the near future.
Saskatchewan’s Energy and Resources Minister, Bill Boyd announced on Thursday that a reactor will not be built over the next decade anywhere in the province, but hasn’t ruled out nuclear power for the future.
 

Too big, too costly

 Saskatchewan Energy Minister Bill Boyd says cost and demand were the two biggest factors that determined the province not proceeding with a 1,000 megawatt nuclear facility in the province.

Sask. says no to nuclear, for now

Lloydminster won't be the future home to a nuclear power facility, at least not now. 

 The provincial government today outlined its strategic direction for uranium development in Saskatchewan. Under that direction uranium exploration and mining will be enhanced, value-added nuclear research, education and training will be encouraged, but a specific proposal for a large-scale nuclear power plant will not proceed at this time. 

Thorpe Recovery Centre helping out

 The Thorpe Recovery Centre wants people in the throws of crisis  and addiction to know they have a place to go for help. 
Thorpe’s outpatient service clinic hides a wealth of knowledge, support and information behind its small doors located in downtown Lloydminster. 
Outpatient clinic manager and counsellor Daryl Arneson said while outpatient services have been available since 1982, the clinic and its services often go unnoticed. 

Bridging the gap

 Lakeland College is taking steps to honour its heritage and students. Last week Elders, students and staff, including the college’s aboriginal cultural facilitator, Carla Bohnet, held a “raising of the lodge ceremony” on campus, where a traditional teepee was erected.
